Cellist Raphael Wallfisch performs the UK premiere of Mieczyslaw Weinberg’s Cello Concertino in Manchester
Raphael Wallfisch, one of the most distinguished solo cellists of our time, is President of the Northern Chamber Orchestra and in November gives the UK première of Mieczysław Weinberg’s Cello Concertino at The Stoller Hall in Manchester.
Weinberg was a contemporary of Shostakovich who surpassed his friend in the quantity of symphonies and quartets he composed, and whose work has recently gained new recognition from critics and audiences alike. Wallfisch also plays the original version of Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations, which marries the expressive power of the instrument with the virtuosity of its player. Also on the programme are Gustav Holst’s St Paul’s Suite, which shows the perfection of his string writing, and the ever fresh Fifth Symphony by the youthful Franz Schubert.
The performance takes place at the stunning Stoller Hall in Manchester and is the orchestra’s first concert of their 2019-20 season at the RIBA-award winning auditorium. The season also includes concerts featuring guest soloists Colin Currie (percussion) and Anthony Marwood (violin). The concert is repeated the following night at Macclesfield’s Heritage Centre.
Tickets start at £13, are £5.50 for students and under 18s go free. To book, visit The Stoller Hall’s website, or call 0333 130 0967.
