Northern Chamber Orchestra Presents: “Death and the Maiden”
The Northern Chamber Orchestra (NCO) is proud to present “Death and the Maiden,” a captivating evening of classical music featuring renowned violinist and director Katie Stillman. This exceptional concert will take place on Saturday 6 April at 7:30pm at The King’s School in Macclesfield.
The programme for the evening includes a diverse selection of pieces that promise to enthral audiences. Beginning with Purcell’s Chacony in an edition by Britten, the performance sets a captivating tone. Britten’s youthful masterpiece, the Simple Symphony, follows, offering a contrast with its optimistic tone and intricate composition.
An exciting highlight of the evening is Anna Clyne’s Stride, a piece inspired by Beethoven’s Pathétique Sonata. Clyne, celebrated as one of Britain’s foremost contemporary composers, brings a fresh perspective to the concert with her innovative composition.
The centrepiece of the evening is Schubert’s renowned string quartet, Death and the Maiden, presented here in Mahler’s arrangement for string ensemble. This haunting and dramatic piece, drawing its title from one of Schubert’s earlier songs, promises to be a profound and unforgettable experience for all in attendance.
Leading the performance is the esteemed Katie Stillman, whose remarkable career as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral principal has garnered widespread acclaim. As Associate Leader of Manchester Camerata and a guest leader with prestigious ensembles such as Opera North and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, Stillman brings her exceptional talent and expertise to the NCO stage.
Tickets for the “Death and the Maiden” concert are priced at £27.00, with special discounts available for those under 30. Additionally, students and those under 18 can attend for free.
