Our Artist in Association, Chloë Hanslip, plays the Shostakovich violin sonata, composed in 1968 for David Oistrakh on his 60th birthday. Arranged for violin, strings and percussion by violinist Mikhail Zinman, it provides a typically powerful emotional journey ending with a monumental passacaglia.
The programme begins with Grieg’s 1884 evocation of a time 200 years earlier when Ludvig Holberg, the Norwegian Shakespeare, was born. Grieg adapted his own piano composition so effectively for strings.
Elgar’s serenade of 1892 was originally rejected by his publisher. Now it is a jewel of the string orchestra repertoire. Gerald Finzi’s beautiful, bitter-sweet romance completes the programme.
